Our daughter, who has been taking horseback riding lessons and mounted archery lessons for a year, now has 2 competitions under her belt. Last year she got the silver medal, this time she brought home the GOLD! 🎯🏆 She won High Score in the Triple Shot and scored the highest overall. She entered the walk/trot event again with 4 other kids. Way to go, our zombie mounted archer! With practice and determination combined with your natural shooting ability, we know we'll be seeing you going up against adults in their more advanced events soon!
(Notice that she nailed the zombie target right in the eye!)

Several people were interested in our greenhouse project here at Sunny Oaks. We are building an aquaponics system to grow fruits and vegetables for our own use and to start a CSA as well as sell to restaurants and farmers markets. Aquaponics is a nearly self-sustaining closed system of an aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (plants grown in water). The waste from the fish is delivered to grow beds filled with a media such as expanded shale instead of soil. Bacteria, the good kind, grows on the media and breaks down the fish waste into nitrates. Worms are then added to aid in the breakdown of organic matter.
There are some great youtube channels/videos that describe these systems and how they are built:

Phase 1 of the build is the greenhouse foundation and a lost cost cooling method known as earth tubes. This cooling system should allow us to have a longer growing season during the warmer months. Earth tubes is a concept first developed and used by the Romans and is just now starting to make a comeback. The idea is to circulate the hot air in the structure through tubes in the earth. The soil acts as a heat exchange, taking the heat from the air which reduces the temperature of the air. When the air comes back into the structure at the cooler temperature, the overall temperature in the structure is reduced. The earth tube system is effectively an air conditioner only using a fan and buried “tubes”. These tubes are typically a corrugated drain pipe. There is surprisingly little research on these systems. The information on how to construct them comes from empirical data and rules of thumb collected from the practical experience that people have documented on the web.
A year ago, we were not only blessed with the purchase of a 10 acre horse ranch (there were multiple offers), we were blessed with our first boarder who, well...came with the ranch. World Champion horse archer, Mike Sabo, and his horse, Joker, were boarding with the previous owners and Mike asked the previous owners to ask us if we would let them stay as a self care boarder. Well, yes! That was an exciting moment for us! A horse ranch WITH a horse already there! Little did we know the limitless blessings that that one easy "yes" would bring us.
Fast forward 1 year and 3 months and our 12 yo daughter, Olivia, has just excitedly entered her 2nd horse archery competition (after taking lessons from Mike and getting 2nd place in her first competition), Mike will now be teaching archery clinics, archery classes, and horse archery at Sunny Oaks, and Sunny Oaks is now sporting a new competition sized horse archery course!
